Binary translator
Type text for binary, or paste binary to read it.
About this translator
Computers store text as numbers, and numbers as binary: a row of ones and zeros. Each character gets a code (in plain English text, the ASCII code), and the code is written in eight binary digits, called a byte. The capital letter A is 65, which is 01000001 in binary.
This translator converts text into 8-bit binary and back. Characters outside plain ASCII, such as accented letters and emoji, are converted using UTF-8, so one character may take two, three or four bytes.
To read binary by hand, write the place values 128, 64, 32, 16, 8, 4, 2, 1 under the eight digits and add up the values where there is a 1. For 01000001, that is 64 plus 1, or 65, which is the letter A.

Questions
How do I convert text to binary?
Type the text in the first box. Each character is replaced by its 8-digit binary code and the codes are separated by spaces.
What is binary for the letter A?
The capital letter A is 01000001. The lowercase letter a is 01100001: the only difference is the 32s place.
Can I convert binary back to text?
Yes. Paste groups of eight 0s and 1s into the second box. Spaces between groups are optional.
Does it handle emoji?
Yes, using UTF-8. An emoji usually takes four bytes, which shows as four groups of eight digits.
