About this translator
Morse code writes each letter as a pattern of short signals (dots) and long signals (dashes). Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail developed it for the telegraph in the 1830s and 1840s, and the International Morse Code used here was standardised in 1865 and revised in 1938. It is still used by amateur radio operators and in some aviation navigation beacons, and it is a popular way to hide a message in a puzzle.
Letters are separated by a space and words by a slash. A dash lasts three times as long as a dot, the gap inside a letter is one dot long, the gap between letters is three dots, and the gap between words is seven.
To decode by ear, learn the sound of each letter, not the dots and dashes on paper. E is a single short beep and T is a single long one, which makes them the easiest. Practise the ten most common letters first: E, T, A, O, I, N, S, H, R, D.
