Cursive f

In cursive, the lowercase letter f takes 1 stroke and is a tall letter that also drops below the baseline. The model on this page is US Traditional, the connected style most American classrooms teach: the pen stays on the paper inside a word, and every letter is drawn to flow into the next. Press Play to watch the letter write itself, then use Step to move one stroke at a time. In English text f is the number 16 most common letter, at about 2.2% of all letters, so it comes up in most paragraphs.

The only lowercase cursive letter that runs from the top line to the descender line in a single loop pair.

Stroke by stroke

  1. Start on the baseline at the left side. Sweep across to the right and make a loop that crosses your own line, ending just below the dashed midline at the right side.

Common mistakes

Drawing the lower loop too small, so the f looks like an l.

f is most often confused with l. Put them side by side and check the first stroke: the starting point and the height are what separate them.

How f joins to the next letter

In connected cursive the pen leaves f between the baseline and the midline. That exit point decides the connector to the letter that follows. These are the pairs you will write most often.

fa: a bridge join: the connector leaves at the midline and dips to the next letter's start; the a starts at the midline
ft: a bridge join: the connector leaves at the midline and dips to the next letter's start; the t starts at the top line
fi: a bridge join: the connector leaves at the midline and dips to the next letter's start; the i starts at the midline
fl: a bridge join: the connector leaves at the midline and dips to the next letter's start; the l starts at the baseline
fr: a bridge join: the connector leaves at the midline and dips to the next letter's start; the r starts at the baseline
fu: a bridge join: the connector leaves at the midline and dips to the next letter's start; the u starts at the midline
