Cursive l

In cursive, the lowercase letter l takes 1 stroke and is a tall letter that reaches the top line. The model on this page is US Traditional, the connected style most American classrooms teach: the pen stays on the paper inside a word, and every letter is drawn to flow into the next. Press Play to watch the letter write itself, then use Step to move one stroke at a time. In English text l is the number 11 most common letter, at about 4% of all letters, so it comes up in most paragraphs.

A tall loop with no belly: up to the top line, back down the same path, and out.

Stroke by stroke

  1. Start on the baseline at the left side. Sweep across to the right and make a loop that crosses your own line, ending just above the baseline at the middle.

Common mistakes

A loop that is too fat and reads as an e.

l is most often confused with e. Put them side by side and check the first stroke: the starting point and the height are what separate them.

How l joins to the next letter

In connected cursive the pen leaves l at the baseline. That exit point decides the connector to the letter that follows. These are the pairs you will write most often.

le: a low join: the connector runs along the baseline; the e starts at the baseline
lo: a rising join: the connector climbs from the baseline to the next letter's start; the o starts at the midline
ll: a low join: the connector runs along the baseline; the l starts at the baseline
la: a rising join: the connector climbs from the baseline to the next letter's start; the a starts at the midline
li: a rising join: the connector climbs from the baseline to the next letter's start; the i starts at the midline
lu: a rising join: the connector climbs from the baseline to the next letter's start; the u starts at the midline
